Are you unhappy with the appearance of the old silver-mercury fillings in your mouth? Did you know that your old fillingscan also be a health concern and may lead to tooth loss? Not only has there been extensive research about how silver-mercury fillings affect your overall health, but over time these old fillings can leak allowing bacteria to seep into the tooth causing cavities to form underneath the old metal fillings. This can cause major damage to the structure of your teeth, leading to chipped or cracked teeth and/or the need for root canal treatment and porcelain crowns. These old metal restorations can even affect the gum tissue, causing permanent staining of the gums, also known as "amalgam tattoos."
These are some of the reasons that we offer a variety of the highest quality, metal-free options, including white plastic fillings, and porcelain onlays, crowns, and bridges. Today's technology and modern dental materials allow us to be able to transform your smile with natural-looking and long-lasting results.
Both materials can be used, however we recommend porcelain because it is a stronger, custom lab fabricated restoration that provides durability and strength to the remaining tooth structure. Plastic is a great, non-invasive option for restoring small cavities and minor chips and cracks; however, when used for large restorations it is not as long lasting, sometimes needing to ne replaced within 3-5years. With constant replacement, the tooth will eventually require a stronger porcelain restoration.
Porcelain easily wins the material debate in strength, durability, longevity and esthetics, while plastic can still look great, it is not nearly as strong or long-lasting.
As with all restorations, great home care and regular dental visits will help to prolong the life of your dental work.
